Science

Welcome to Science at Saltdean.

At Saltdean Primary, we are all scientists! We:

  • Are curious and enthusiastic about learning, relating it to experiences, observations and products in everyday life.
  • Ask questions to deepen our understanding of scientific concepts.
  • Make decisions, plan investigations and question our findings.
  • Understand a range of types of enquiry, including observing over time, pattern-seeking, identifying and classifying, researching using secondary sources, and fair testing.
  • Carry out practical experiments and observations.
  • Develop our knowledge and understanding of scientific ideas and concepts, using subject-specific vocabulary to explain our thinking.
  • Collect, analyse and present data in a range of ways, making connections.
  • Sustain an interest and respect for the world and people in it by learning about a diverse range of scientists.
  • Explore a range of practical tasks and applications in real life

Tactile Concept Maps

At the start of each new project, children from Year 1 to Year 6 show what they already know using a range of physical resources. These are a great way for teachers to uncover any misconceptions - and identify any experts in the classroom!

 British Science Week

The theme of British Science Week was 'Connections' which was a perfect match with one of our Learning Powers - make links and connections - and enabled us all to be engineers! Every child attended a special assembly and then took part in a workshop with a visiting expert, doing everything from creating a rollercoaster run to building bridges! Some children used equipment like handsaws while others build electrical circuits, and everybody had the opportunity to evaluate their design or product. It was a truly inspiring week with the children so engaged with their learning.
