RE
At Saltdean Primary we invest in the children's spiritual identity and wellbeing from Reception all the way to Year 6. Through our use of Cornerstones as a curriculum platform, we deliver our statutory teaching of RE; the Brighton and Hove agreed syllabus. Our RE projects focus predominantly on festivals and we use this celebratory focus to excite and engage the children. Units are knowledge rich and cross curricular bringing in art, history, music, literacy and PSHE links. Through Cornerstones, the children learn explicitly about the 6 main world religions (Hinduism, Sikhism, Christianity, Judaism, and Buddhism). We additionally cover secular world views including Humanism as we understand that spirituality is not limited to religion.
During their time at Saltdean, children learn about the lives, practices, traditions and beliefs of different groups and how those groups find and express meaning through sacred art, texts, places and artifacts. We ensure that our children consider some of life's 'big questions' and they are taught to challenge and think critically about differing views. Projects give every child the opportunity to consider their own beliefs and experiences whilst ensuring they value and respect the beliefs and practices of others. Our aim is that through our high quality and diverse RE curriculum, our children will have a strong sense of their own beliefs and place in the world; an understanding and curiosity regarding the beliefs and lives of others and that they leave us ready to take their place in a wonderfully diverse and ever-changing society.
Parents have the right to withdraw their child from RE teaching. Parents should contact the school should they choose to exercise this right. They will then be invited to discuss the matter with the class teacher/subject lead and a member of SLT.

Our Curriculum Intent:
|
We want our curriculum, in all its breadth and depth, to prepare our learners not only for the calm waters they will visit, but also for the stormy and unfamiliar experiences they will also face on their journey. We want to give them the confidence that the destination of the journey is theirs to decide, but that they can always navigate home to Saltdean, their starting point and safe haven.

Our RE curriculum design
|
Our Curriculum for Religious Education starts in the Early Years, where the children explore their own spirituality and practices through discussions of family, community, festivals and beliefs. Children begin to think about the meaning of belonging and explore people, stories and objects that are special to them and to others.
In Key Stage 1, the children are introduced explicitly to the 6 main world religions. They learn about the practices and celebrations of people of faith and draw direct links to their own lived experiences.
As the children enter Key Stage 2, they build on this prior knowledge; deepening their understanding of practices and key beliefs for the 6 main world religions. Learning focuses on new and varied aspects of the religions and children begin to compare and contrast common themes.
By Upper Key Stage 2, children’s understanding of the 6 main world religions means that they can critically evaluate the ideas and beliefs presented. They use their knowledge to explore and articulate their own beliefs, draw direct links between religions and show an understanding of the global impact of faith. They consider ‘Big Questions’ and leave our school as respectful and curious citizens in our diverse and ever changing world
