Year 6 Home Learning

Year 6

Week 2

Hello Year 6! We hope you are getting into the swing of things now? We miss seeing your happy faces in school but hope that you are all safe and well and enjoying spending this unexpected time with your families.

Below is the home learning for week 2. Completion date is Friday 3rd April (excluding European project - see details below).

Reading

We hope you are enjoying the extra time that you have for reading. You could fit in some reading time after lunch as well as at bedtime. This week Miss F-W finished reading Malamander which is the Brighton Young City Reads book for 2020. It’s a mystery set in a seaside town which you’ll like if you’re into strange sea creatures, magical objects and feisty characters!

Whatever you read, remember to write a note in your Reading Record and use the Reading Journal activities to inspire you each day. A Reading Journal of activities is attached HERE and HERE

You also have reading comprehension books to work through. During this second week, we would like you to complete one fiction activity. You can choose which text to do.

Spelling

This week’s spellings are focusing on i spelt with a y. Ask a member of your family to test you on these spellings.  You can practice these spellings with games on this website: https://www.spellzone.com/word_lists/list-5995.htm

Writing

** Hopefully some of you have been able to download clicker 8 on your computer or iPad to help you with your writing **

This week our writing is all about fun and games! Think of fun games that you can play at home and choose one to write the instructions to. Imagine you are writing for a younger child who has never heard of your game before. You could choose a classic like Hide & Seek or the pen and paper game Dotty Squares, or you could invent your own! You could even create your own board game using recycled materials like cereal boxes. When you write your instructions, remember to include information like the number of players and any equipment that is needed. Here is an example of some instructions to a popular board game.

Ludo Instructions

You could also video your own advert for your new game. Here is an example of and advert for a game called Mousetrap. Hopefully it will give you some inspiration.

Maths

** If you do maths in a smaller group or 1:1 with an adult, scroll down for a different activity as you may find this easier to complete independently **

This week’s maths is all about shape. There are fun tasks including exploring nets of 3D shapes in your home. Open a kitchen cupboard and you will find all sorts of nets inside! There are slides, worksheets and practical tasks for you to complete. You can choose which parts of this you would like to do. We would recommend starting with the power point and then moving on to the worksheet or practical task, or both!

Powerpoint 1        Worksheet 1

Powerpoint 2        Worksheet 2

Powerpoint 3        Worksheet 3

We would like you to work your way through the Y6 Maths CGP book. In the second week, we would like you to complete sections 3 and 4. Ask an adult to mark this with you – the answers are at the back of the book.

We would also like you to log on to Mathletics and complete the ten tasks which have been set for you this week. Feel free to play around on the other activities that you want to work on, too.

Science

We had started to explore light and shadows in our Science lessons at school. Create a poster explaining the meaning of the words transparent, translucent and opaque. Include a definition of each key word as well as some examples of different materials or items around your home which fit into each category. You can use a torch to check how to classify items if you are not sure!

PE/Mindfulness

This week we’ve really enjoyed joining Joe Wicks for PE at 9am each day. It’s a half-hour workout which he streams live all around the world. When we joined in on Tuesday there were almost a million people taking part! It’s a great start to the day and we highly recommend making it part of your routine. You can find it on his YouTube channel, The Body Coach TV.

There are lots of other websites and Youtube channels which will give you fun ideas and activities to stay fit and healthy over this period. We have recommended a few below:

Some of you do you maths or spelling in smaller groups or with an adult 1:1. If you are finding any of the maths or spelling a bit too tricky, you can try these ideas instead:
